The complete guide to issuing CEU certificates (from course setup to learner inbox)
Published April 9, 2026
I’ve broken this process dozens of times before getting it right. I’ve sent certificates with typos, forgotten evaluation forms, used the wrong CEU type, and once emailed the wrong certificate to the wrong person. Every mistake happened because I was doing steps out of order or skipping ones I thought were optional. This is the process I use now.
What’s the full process?
(1) Define the course — title, objectives, CEU type, hours, instructor. (2) Build content. (3) Write assessment. (4) Build evaluation. (5) Configure certificate template. (6) Set up delivery. (7) Test the full flow yourself. (8) Share the link. Check the Handbook for compliance requirements at each stage.
What step do providers skip most?
Testing the full flow. Take your own quiz. See the certificate. Check the email. Five minutes of testing prevents the most embarrassing mistakes.
How should the template be configured?
Every required field pre-populated from course setup. A unique ID auto-generates. Check the Handbook for current required fields.
Manual or automatic delivery?
Automatic. Manual delivery introduces errors and doesn’t scale. The difference in time and accuracy is immediate.
What records should be created?
Certificate PDF, assessment results, evaluation responses, completion date/time, learner contact info. All in one place, indexed by learner and course.
How do I handle errors after issuance?
Re-issue corrected certificates quickly. Contact the learner, explain the correction, log the re-issuance.
It looks like a lot of steps, but once your template and system are configured, most happen once per course. Per-learner work is fully automated. That’s the whole idea: heavy setup, zero ongoing labor.
About CEU Lab Certs
I'm an Org ACE Provider who spent years manually creating CEU certificates and stitching together clunky systems that weren't built for the BACB's changing requirements. I built CEU Lab Certs to be the tool I wished existed — BACB-compliant templates, shareable quiz links, automated certificate delivery, and audit-ready records in one place, so you can spend your time teaching instead of doing certificate admin on a Sunday.
