What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 CEUs for behavior analysts?

Published April 9, 2026

This distinction sounds simple but trips up new providers. The Type 1 vs. Type 2 difference determines who can issue the CEU, what format it takes, and how it’s documented. As always, the BACB ACE Provider Handbook and the BACB website are your definitive sources.

What is a Type 1 CEU?

Type 1 CEUs are offered directly by the BACB or through BACB-specific channels. Check the BACB website for the current definition and examples.

What is a Type 2 CEU?

Type 2 CEUs are offered by BACB-authorized ACE providers. If you’re an ACE provider, your CEUs are Type 2. The vast majority of CEUs BCBAs earn are Type 2.

Does the type affect recertification?

Both count, but check the current BACB recertification requirements for any minimums or maximums associated with each type.

Do I need to label the type on certificates?

Check the Handbook for current guidance on what must appear on the certificate.

Can the same event offer both types?

Typically no — the type is determined by the issuer. BACB = Type 1. ACE provider = Type 2.

If you’re an ACE provider, you’re issuing Type 2. Know it, document it, and check the BACB’s guidance whenever you’re uncertain.

About CEU Lab Certs

I'm an Org ACE Provider who spent years manually creating CEU certificates and stitching together clunky systems that weren't built for the BACB's changing requirements. I built CEU Lab Certs to be the tool I wished existed — BACB-compliant templates, shareable quiz links, automated certificate delivery, and audit-ready records in one place, so you can spend your time teaching instead of doing certificate admin on a Sunday.
