Recertification cycles drive a huge amount of CEU demand, and providers who understand the rules in plain language tend to capture more of it. This is a high-level reference for what BCBAs need each cycle. Important caveat: the BACB updates requirements periodically, and I've watched the rules shift more than once during my time as a provider. Always cross-check against the BACB's official site for the most current numbers before you rely on anything here.
How many CEUs does a BCBA need per recertification cycle?
BCBAs are typically required to earn 32 CEUs every 2-year cycle. Within those 32, a specific number must be in Ethics, and BCBAs who supervise must earn additional Supervision CEUs. BCaBAs have a lower total CEU requirement per cycle. Always verify the exact current numbers on the BACB website, as the BACB updates requirements periodically.
How many of a BCBA's CEUs have to be in Ethics?
A subset of the total 32 CEUs must be designated as Ethics CEUs. This is why issuing certificates with the correct CEU type is so important — a learner can't use a "Learning" CEU to satisfy an Ethics requirement, even if the content was ethics-related, unless the certificate explicitly designates it as Ethics. I see this mistake more often than I'd like.
Do BCBAs who supervise need extra CEUs?
Yes. BCBAs providing supervision are required to earn Supervision CEUs in addition to the standard requirement. As an ACE provider, you can offer Supervision CEUs by creating courses specifically focused on supervision practices and labeling the certificates accordingly.
What CEU types do BCBAs need?
Three main types: Learning, Ethics, and Supervision. The Learning category is the broadest and covers most clinical, conceptual, and applied content. Ethics is reserved for content focused on the BACB Ethics Code. Supervision is reserved for content focused on the practice of supervising others.
How do BCBAs track their CEUs across the cycle?
The BACB doesn't collect CEU certificates routinely — it samples through audits. BCBAs are expected to keep their own certificates for several years in case they're audited, which is why issuing clean, well-labeled, durable certificates matters. Your learners will be holding onto them for a long time, and a certificate that's missing a field or has a typo becomes their problem during their renewal.
Always verify current BACB requirements directly with the BACB before relying on any third-party summary, including this one. The most useful thing you can do as a provider is issue certificates with the correct CEU type clearly labeled — that's the part that determines whether the CEU actually counts toward what the learner needs.
