How to offer PDUs for RBT competency assessments
Published April 9, 2026
Most ABA organizations run some form of competency assessment. What most don’t do is document those as professional development. If you’re already assessing competency, issuing a PDU certificate is the missing step.
Can competency assessments count as PDUs?
When embedded in structured training with learning content, yes. Pair the assessment with instruction and you have a legitimate training event.
How to structure it?
Training module → assessment → PDU certificate. The training + assessment + documentation structure is what makes it count.
What topics work best?
Anything on the RBT Task List: discrete trial instruction, data collection, behavior reduction, professional conduct.
How to issue certificates?
Each competency topic as a course with a PDU template. Completion triggers automatic certificate.
Benefit for the RBT?
Documented development they can use for renewal, plus evidence of their skills growing over time.
Competency assessments and professional development aren’t separate things. If you’re already checking competency, document it.
