How to build an online education business as a licensed clinician

Published April 9, 2026

Most licensed clinicians have more expertise than they’ll ever use in direct clinical work. That’s not a critique — it’s math. You can only see so many clients. An online education business lets you package what you know and deliver it without adding hours. I built this while still working clinically, and the biggest lesson was that the hardest part isn’t the content — it’s deciding to start.

What does it look like?

As simple as one on-demand CEU sold through a landing page, or as complex as a full catalog, branded CEU store, live workshops, and a membership. Start with one course. The ones who try to launch ten at once usually launch zero.

What should I teach?

The thing you get asked about most. If colleagues keep asking, that’s your first course. Start by noticing what people already ask you for.

Do I need to leave clinical work?

No. Most clinician-educators started while still working clinically. The question isn’t should I quit — it’s can I find 2–3 focused hours a week.

What tools do I need?

Content hosting, a quiz + certificate system, and payment collection. A branded CEU store or simple landing page is enough to start. No LMS needed on day one.

How do I price my first course?

Higher than your gut says. CEUs sell for $10–$30/hour in the ABA space. Start there. You can adjust — but starting low and raising later is harder.

Biggest mistake?

Waiting until everything is perfect. Ship the first version. Get feedback. Improve from there. Imperfect action beats perfect planning.

You already have the expertise. What the world needs is for you to package it so it reaches more people. Start with one offer. Make it good. Build from there.

About CEU Lab Certs

I'm an Org ACE Provider who spent years manually creating CEU certificates and stitching together clunky systems that weren't built for the BACB's changing requirements. I built CEU Lab Certs to be the tool I wished existed — BACB-compliant templates, shareable quiz links, automated certificate delivery, and audit-ready records in one place, so you can spend your time teaching instead of doing certificate admin on a Sunday.
