BACB Ethics CEU requirements: what counts, what doesn’t, and how to design one

Published April 9, 2026

Ethics CEUs carry more weight than most providers realize. BCBAs need a specific number per cycle, so demand is consistent — but the BACB holds this category to a higher standard. You can’t add “ethics” to a clinical topic and call it an Ethics CEU. The content needs to genuinely center on the BACB Ethics Code.

What content qualifies as an Ethics CEU?

Content focused on the BACB Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts — the code itself, its application, case examples involving ethical decision-making. A clinical course that briefly mentions ethics is not an Ethics CEU. Check the Handbook.

Can I turn a Learning CEU into an Ethics CEU by adding ethics content?

Not really. You could potentially offer two separate CEUs if the ethics portion is substantial enough and assessed independently. But relabeling a clinical course as Ethics because you added ten minutes on informed consent doesn’t meet the bar.

How do I design a strong Ethics CEU?

Start with specific provisions from the Ethics Code. Build case scenarios around real-world applications. Your assessment should test ethical reasoning, not memorization of code section numbers.

Do Ethics CEUs have stricter assessment requirements?

The minimum question-per-hour ratio is the same, but the quality bar is effectively higher because the content is more nuanced. Ethics questions that have an obviously right answer aren’t doing their job.

What’s the biggest mistake with Ethics CEUs?

Overconfidence about what counts. I’ve seen providers label courses as Ethics because they mention “best practices.” That’s a Learning CEU. Ethics means the BACB Ethics Code. Getting this wrong affects the learner who counted on it for their Ethics requirement.

Ethics CEUs matter more than their share of the total requirement suggests. Design them carefully, label them accurately, and check the Ethics Code and the Handbook before you finalize. The demand for good Ethics CEUs is strong — but only the good ones build your reputation.

About CEU Lab Certs

I'm an Org ACE Provider who spent years manually creating CEU certificates and stitching together clunky systems that weren't built for the BACB's changing requirements. I built CEU Lab Certs to be the tool I wished existed — BACB-compliant templates, shareable quiz links, automated certificate delivery, and audit-ready records in one place, so you can spend your time teaching instead of doing certificate admin on a Sunday.
